Kekerengu is a Beach break with both right and lefts on offer depending on the swell angle, located on the coast from north of Kaikoura where the road leaves the coast and goes inland. The beach has a rocky points at either end, and the rest of the beach is mostly small stones. Kekerengu beach produces a wally,punchy, fun beach break wave. When its small watch you don't hit the beach as the surf breaks close to shore. Good for intermediate to expert surfers.
CC's is a beach break and river mouth on a sandy/shingle beach, located at Conway Flat, south of Kaikoura. There are several peaks along the beach with both right and left-handers. The Conway River Mouth can also get quite good. The wave is hollow, with a steep drop-in, and barrels on offer. Good for intermediate to expert surfers. River mouths often have strong currents or rips.
Oaro is fun beach break on a sand/stone beach, right at the southern end of the Kaikoura coastline. Up the beach it is small stones and the surf breaks on a sand bottom. There are several peaks along the beach with both right and left handers. Oaro is usually uncrowded. Good for all levels of surfer.
Kahutara is a right-hand point break off the mouth of the Kahutara River. The beach has a rocky point at the south end, which leads into a stony shore at the river mouth and then the rest of the beach to the north is mostly sand/small stones. Kahutara gives a nice long, wally, fast ride, often with a steep, solid drop-in and offers a good barrel. When it's small, watch you don't hit the beach as the surf breaks close to shore. Kahutara can get crowded when it's on, so know the rules and respect the locals. Best for intermediate to expert surfers.
