There are several peaks down the beach to choose from, with both left and right handers. The wave is a punchy shorey wave. Good for all levels of surfer.

City Reef is a reef/beach break on a stoney/rocky beach, located at the southern end of West Shore beach off the rocky point. There is one main peak with both left and right handers to choose from. You can jump off the point to save your paddling arms. The wave is usually soft and wally, Good for all levels of surfer. Can get popular, so know the rules and respect the locals.
Hardinge Road is a right hand point break on a stoney beach. The break is very sheltered from the port, so it needs a massive east swell to get it working and even then it will likely be small. When it is working, you will be rewarded with a really long, nice wally wave. Good for all levels of surfer.
Awatoto is a beach break, on a shingle beach, located at the Awatoto Rivermouth. There are several peaks to enjoy and the wave is powerful, with hollow barrels. Variable banks which change often, especially when the river mouth gets dug out. Good for intermediate to expert surfers. Be careful, river mouths often have strong currents or rips.
