Okiwi Bay, also known as Sandy Bay, is north of Kaikoura featuring a beach break on a sandy beach. The wave is nice and easy, either soft and fat or it can get a good wall to it, with both right and left handers on offer. Best at a lower tide. Watch out for the boulders and seaweed in the shorey. Good learners wave, this is where the local surf school usually comes. The beach gets sheltered from the north east wind so can be good when everywhere else is wind blown.
Oaro is fun beach break on a sand/stone beach, right at the southern end of the Kaikoura coastline. Up the beach it is small stones and the surf breaks on a sand bottom. Kahutara is a right-hand point break off the mouth of the Kahutara River. The beach has a rocky point at the south end, which leads into a stony shore at the river mouth and then the rest of the beach to the north is mostly sand/small stones. Kahutara gives a nice long, wally, fast ride, often with a steep, solid drop-in and offers a good barrel. When it's small, watch you don't hit the beach as the surf breaks close to shore. Kahutara can get crowded when it's on, so know the rules and respect the locals. Best for intermediate to expert surfers.
Kaikoura is a surf destination that you must see and experience! With a deep ocean trench coming close to land, it provides grunty south swells that fire along its majestic coastline. Amoung the jewels found in this region are: The epic Kahutara right-hand point break that can handle big swells, and Mangamanu (Halfmoon Bay), a dreamy right-hand point break with National protected status. There are also a large number of memorable beach breaks, like swell-magnet Meatworks and the new town break.
Graveyards produces a powerful, yet fat, wave. It is a bit of a small right-hand point break, but if it's a little messy you can get some peaks with lefts in there too. Can have some hollow take offs. Best with more of a south swell angle. Watch for rock boil ups.
Meatworks is a boulder beach with a solid peak, offering rights and lefts. It is a powerful wave with a fast take off. Needs to be at least 1.5ft or you'll be on the rocks. Watch for rock boil-ups. Careful getting in and out as the surf rolls the boulders around. This spot is popular, so crowds are expected - know the rules and respect the locals. Best for experienced intermediate to expert surfers.
Mangamaunu is a top-rated, right-hand point break with a stone/boulder beach. The wave can peel off for several hundred meters giving an incredible ride. There are three main hollow/fast sections, known as Outsides-Middles-Insides, with fatter sections found in between each. Mangamaunu is best with a bit of size, from 2-6ft. When it gets bigger, a rip can form, sucking out around the point, pulling you out of the line-up. Best for intermediate to expect riders.
