Motunau Island has right and left point breaks on a rocky offshore island, located off Motunau beach and the Motunau village, north Canterbury. There is a right hand point on the north east side of the island and a left hander on the south west side of the island. The wave is punchy and hollow. Good for intermediate to expert surfers. You will need a boat to get out to the island, boat ramp in river mouth and needs to be round high tide to be able to launch.
Leithfield Beach is a beach break on a shingle/stoney beach, located on the coast from the Leithfield township, south of Amberley and north of Christchurch. There are several peaks to choose from along the beach with both right and left handers. The wave is punchy and fun. Good for all levels of surfer.
Fossils is a left-hand point break and a sandy beach break with a rocky point, located at the north end of Amberley Beach, north of Christchurch. There is a good left-hand point break on the rocky point at the north end of the beach which goes through onto the beach break. The wave is punchy and wally, good fun and great for mals. Suitable for all levels of surfer.
Amberley Beach is a beach break on a shingle/stoney beach, located on the coast from the Amberley township, north of Christchurch. There are several peaks to choose from along the beach with both right and left handers. The wave is punchy and fun. Good for all levels of surfer. Fossils is at the north end of the beach, which features a left hand point break and beach break, but requires a 4WD to access or a very long walk.
Hurunui River Mouth is a river mouth bar break and beach break on a shingle beach, located just south of Gore Bay and Cheviot, North Canterbury. The Hurunui River Mouth bar has a couple of peaks, with both right and left handers, and there are also several other peaks along the beach. The wave is punchy and hollow. Good for intermediate to expert surfers. River mouths often have strong currents or rips.
Mid Shore is a beach break and a left hand point break on a sandy beach with rocky point, located on the coast from Waipara, north Canterbury. There is a good left hand point break on the rocky point at the north end of the beach which is punchy and wally. needs the right swell direction to break well. Then there is a beach break on the main beach with several peaks to choose from with both right and left handers. The beach break is punchy and fun. Good for intermediate to expert surfers.
Port Robinson is a rocky bay with a right hand point break through the bay. Port Robinson is fairly inconsistant and requires a good size swell at the right angle to get it working. Can produce big long barrels or nice wally sections. Best left to advanced and expert surfers.
Fields is an isolated beach just round the point from Motunau Beach. It features a steep cliff/hill down to the sandy beach which can also help shelter the beach from some winds. The wave is usually soft and fat, but can get good when a bit bigger. The peaks are variable with both right and left-handers. You can get a good right-hander at the southern end when big enough. Good for surfers of all levels. No crowds here.
Motunau Beach is a beach break with variable peaks, just along from the river mouth. the beach is stony/rocky then leads onto sand. The beach offers both right and left handers providing good, fun waves. often softer waves, great for a mal. Good for all levels of surfer. For the adventurous, if you have access to a boat you can try Motunau island.
Gore Bay is a small holiday location on the coast from Cheviot, in North Canterbury. This is a beach break, onto a mostly sandy beach, with small stones higher on the beach. It's a long beach with several peaks offering punchy waves and possible barrels. Gore Bay picks up plenty of swell from a range of angles from north, east and south, providing a good chance of surf. Can get a few crowds on a good weekend day. Suitable for all levels of surfer.
