Waiinu Beach is a right hand point break and a beach break on a sandy beach. The right hand point is at the western end of the beach. The wave is punchy and hollow, but can be softer when smaller. Good for all levels of surfer.
The Point/Fences is a long right hand point break on a sandy/rocky beach, located just east of Waiinu Beach. The starts off hollow with a barrel sections and then gets wally through the other two sections. The start is known as the Point, then the middle section is Fences and the last section is Cabins. When its pumping you can surf right through all the sections, otherwise pick the sections that looks best for you. Best for Expert level surfers.
Whanganui River Mouth is a left hand point break that breaks on the inside of the river mouth on the south side on the river. This only breaks on huge swells. The wave is a solid left hand wall, giving good rides. Advanced to expert surfers only. Watch out, river mouths often have strong currents and rips.
Wanganui South Beach is a beach break located behind the airport, just south of the Wanganui River. There are several peaks along the beach to choose from, one of the better ones is where the sewage outfall pipe comes out. The wave hollow and powerful. Intermediate to expert surfers only.
Rangiora Street is a beach break on a sandy beach, located a short distance north of the of the Wanganui River. There are several peaks along the beach to choose from. The wave is punchy and fun. Suitable for surfers of all levels.
Wanganui North Mole is a beach break on a sandy beach, located just on the north side of the of the Wanganui River breakwater. There are several peaks along the beach to choose from. The wave is hollow and powerful. Intermediate to expert surfers only.
Longbeach Drive is a beach break on a sandy beach, located a short distance past the Castle Cliff Golf Course. There are several peaks along the beach to choose from with both left and right handers. The wave is punchy and fun. Suitable for surfers of all levels.
Kai Iwi is a beach break on a sandy beach, located at Kai iwi, north of Wanganui at the mouth of the Mowhanau and Kai Iwi Streams. There are several peaks along the beach to choose from with both left and right handers. The wave is changable and can be punchy and fun. Suitable for surfers of all levels.
