You can also take a boat or take the ferry, you can take your car across on the ferry. note you are not allowed to paddle the channel between Matakana Island and Mount Maunganui. There is a good right hand break into the right mouth, and several peaks along the beach to choose from with both right and left handers. The wave is punchy and fun.
