Otago is a swell magnet and is rarely flat. It is open to the powerful swells from the deep south, but also has some amazing options for waves generated from the north or east. Blackhead, St Clair and Allans Beach all crank on a good south swell. Murderers and Aromoana are north swell dream spots. The water is cool and the crowds are minimal, especially if you go exploring, which is something you should definitely do in this region!
Allans Beach is a solid sandy beach break. There are many peaks that form down the beach offering both left and right-handers. Suitable for intermediate to expert surfers, or beginners on a small day. Often a bit bigger than the city beaches.
St Clair is a popular local spot in Dunedin and can get a bit busy on a good day in the summer. St Clair is a sandy beach break which sometimes has a good right hander off the rocky point by the salt water swimming pool. It can get hollow and offer good barrels. Good for all levels.
